Elegant night for a good cause

Warracknabeal Town Hall was filled with mystery and elegance this Valentine's Day with Rural Northwest Health (RNH) hosting its Romeo and Juliet Masquerade Ball as a fundraiser for the organisation's cancer support group.

The black-and-red themed event saw 75 guests dance the night away in dashing suits and gowns, raising $458.50 for the support group.

Group host RNH cancer resource nurse Karen Miller said the money would go towards an experience that “lifts the members’ spirits and brings a smile to their faces”.

Jeff Woodward entertained the audience with music while guest speakers shared stories about their battles with cancer.

Wimmera Prostate Cancer Survivor Group’s Brian Nagorcka and Jack Janetzski spoke about their personal experiences living with prostate cancer before Mr Janetzski performed a song that meant a lot to him throughout his cancer journey.

RNH sexual health nurse Lou Bellizzi also opened up to guests about her experience with cervical cancer and the importance of screenings.

All speakers echoed the same message of how early screening was vital and if something wasn't feeling quite right to go see your GP.

The event was made possible by a grant received from Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (GICS).

RNH project support officer Bernie O’Connor praised the work RNH had been doing to screen local communities.

Several best-dressed prizes were also given to guests, Jessica Nippers walking away with 'best dressed female' as she wore an elegant red ensemble.

'Best dressed male' was awarded to Scott Neill who wore a vibrant blue New Orleans-style mask, and Angie Cox won 'best costume' for her Pilgrim-style costume.

Mark Marshall and his wife Michelle collected 'cutest couple' as they wore formal outfits.

RNH expressed its thanks to all who donated and to GICS, guest speakers, Jeff Woodward, Cheeky Fox Café, Breuer’s Hire, the Warracknabeal Town Hall committee and all who assisted.

The cancer support group meets monthly at RNH's Warracknabeal campus and provides a place for cancer clients, spouses and/or carers to share their experiences in a confidential and supportive environment.
