FLASHBACK: October 31 1996
Hopetoun’s First Billy Cart Derby was held on Sunday, October 27, 1996, with 58 entries.
Tegan Jones (back) and Jenna Burdett raced for the finish in the primary school sprint section at Hopetoun's First Billy Cart Derby.

Both girls set a quick pace until, like many others, Tegan found the fence a real challenge.
She was soon given a second push-start to finish the race in a good time.

Sections included Junior, Intermediate (High School), and Open in both sprint and cross-country, pneumatic and non-pneumatic.
Prizes were also awarded for Best Cart, which was won by the Donnan family (Camille, Taylor, and Bradley), Fastest Female Driver - Kandi Whichello, pushed by Dianne Phelan, and Best Bingle, which the Lynch and Jones families won.
