Flying Mullet wins again

Not only was last Saturday a good chance for Rainbow golfers to post a good stableford score while there was still plenty of run in the old course, it was also the opening round of the Roy Dunn Fourball – one of the club's most prestigious board events.

Six pair of men keenly threw their hats into the ring, hoping to make it through to the next round.

The pairs were as follows:

1. Aaron 'DeChambeau' Glen and Andy 'Quaddie' Martion

2. Wayne 'Greenskeeper' Nitschke and Daryn 'The Accountant' Clugston

3. Robert 'Slugger' Sluggett and Col 'Hammer' Gebert”

4. Travis 'FOO' Clarke and Oscar 'The Flying Mullett' Clarke

5. Rodney “Popeye” McLean and Dexter 'The Smiling Assassin' Schilling

6. Peter 'Ol’ Man' Gosling and Roger 'Club Breaker' Smith.

Greenskeeper Nitschke and the man they simply call The Accountant.

With Glen hitting some excellent form and his opponents’ bodies not holding up to the rigours of taking on the Royal and Ancient Rainbow, this match did not live up to its billing.

A comfortable win in the end for Glen and Martion.

The next match had it all.

Gebert got off to a great start, birdieing both the 3rd and the 5th and reminding everyone of just how good a golfer this former club champion is.

And The Slugger showed some glimpses of what his best can look like.

However, it was never going to be enough against this brutal father and son team.

absolute ripper.

In the end it was another comfortable win, this time for Clarke and Clarke.

The next match was always going to be full of intrigue.

Certainly, you wouldn’t get four more canny golfers than Popeye McLean, The Smiling Assassin Schilling, Ol’ Man Gosling and Club Breaker Smith.

Both Smith and Gosling had very solid rounds, while Schilling struggled to produce his best.

But it mattered not.

The pirate known as Popeye was up for the challenge, swashbuckling the pair to victory.

So not only is The Smiling Assassin in the singles Grand final, he is in the pairs semi-final as well.

I could well be writing more verses to the ‘Rime of the Ancient Golfer’ in the very near future.

better.

But enough is enough.

It is time for Pam ‘The Grim Reper’ Clugston to use that scythe and slash – and slash deep – to give the rest of us a chance of taking home the bacon.

This week is the second round of the men’s club championships.

Hope to see you there.

Till then, happy hitting.
