Free come-and-try badminton night before teams competition

Badminton is booming in Horsham, with a surge in popularity expected to continue as the Horsham Badminton Association kicks off its Winter season with a Free Come and Try Night on Monday, April 28, at the Horsham College Gymnasium on Baillie Street from 7pm.

The night is open to all, with beginners especially welcome.

Rackets will be available for anyone who wants to give the sport a try.

Horsham Badminton Association president Luke Dunn said there’s a buzz around the new season following record participation numbers in recent months.

“I’m excited about the upcoming season of Badminton,” he said.

“The Summer and Autumn competitions saw an influx of participants with the highest number of competitors for over a decade.

“Popularity of the sport has soared in Horsham and I’m expecting the Winter Competition to also exceed past numbers.”

The following Monday, the association’s popular teams’ competition will begin and run through to mid-September.

For those unable to commit to weekly play, a separate casual round robin competition will also take place each Monday night, ensuring there’s an option for everyone.

“This is a fantastic competition catering for all abilities,” Mr Dunn said.

“The team’s competition is our most popular fixture, which makes for a very social and enjoyable weekly evening.”

There is also good news for younger players. In response to renewed interest from school-aged children, the association will launch a junior program in partnership with Badminton Victoria, starting Monday, May 5, before the regular senior games.

The program will cover all aspects of the sport and be promoted through local schools.

Those who can’t attend the Come and Try night are encouraged to register their interest by messaging Horsham Badminton Association on Facebook.
