Goats steal the library reading event
Children and families flocked to Horsham Library on Saturday, May 10, for a sold-out event that blended books and barnyard fun.
Read to Tiny Goats, the unique reading experience, drew 38 adults, 44 children and 10 goats aged between five and 18 months.
The children took turns reading aloud to the gentle animals in a calm, encouraging space.
Wimmera Libraries coordinator Sarah Wiesner said the program ran in staggered sessions, with around 12 children per group across six back-to-back sessions to avoid crowding the goat enclosure.
“It was a sold-out event,” she said.
“The idea was born from a growing movement in public libraries, where reading aloud to support animals, whether a library dog or bunny, can be a lovely confidence booster for nervous or struggling readers.
“Our furry friends are very patient listeners.”
While the event was designed to support literacy, Ms Wiesner admitted reading sometimes took a back seat.
“Whether much reading happened on the day, I don’t know I think just a lot of cuddling happened in the end,” she said.
“But it seemed very well attended and enjoyed regardless.”
The response was overwhelmingly positive, and interest hasn’t waned.
“We’ve had constant phone calls about whether any spots have become available,” Ms Wiesner said.
“We’d definitely be looking to do it in the future.”
The event has also sparked interest from other regional libraries, which are also interested in doing the same.
With the program’s clear success, Wimmera Libraries is planning more engaging activities for the upcoming school holidays.
“I don’t know whether it’ll include the goats or not yet, but there’s bound to be other exciting things.
“Just keep an eye on our ‘what’s on’ calendar,” Ms Wiesner said.
