Hall hire fees set

Rates for accessing community halls in Horsham Rural City have been set for the coming financial year.

By Rosalea Ryan

From July 1, individuals and groups seeking to hire a hall will be charged a bond of between $100 and $700, plus an hourly rate of $10–$50.

Half-day hire will cost from $25 to a maximum of $100.

For smaller-scale use, the amount for a full day will be capped at $150.

Commercial activities run by large organisations will incur a $200–$500 daily fee.

Councillors voted unanimously at their January 28 meeting to adopt this cost structure on the recommendation of their community halls assets committee.

Speaking in support of the motion, Cr Rebecca Sluggett praised the volunteers who look after these facilities.

"Often a lot of work goes into maintaining the buildings and their surrounding grounds," Cr Sluggett said.

"These halls are vitally important for maintaining good community connections and mental health by providing spaces for social gatherings, functions, meetings and, at times, places of refuge."

Cr Sluggett said she believed district hall committees should be able to use discretion when applying fees as their members had local insight.

The 10 affected halls are:

• Dadswell’s Bridge Hall

• Hamilton lamb Memorial Hall

• Jung Hall

• Laharum Hall

• Mitre Hall

• Natimuk Community Centre (NC2)

• Natimuk Soldiers’ Memorial Hall

• Sailors’ Home Hall

• Taylor’s Lake Hall

• Telangatuk East Hall.
