Hopetoun Heat-town: Mallee community sets new Victorian maximum temperature record
THE residents of Hopetoun were not in a hurry to venture outdoors in the afternoon earlier this week, with the town of about 700 people enduring a blazing summer sun heating roofs, roads and car interiors on a date to recall in future local pub conversations – January 27, 2026.

From Hopetoun to Horsham, the Wimmera and Mallee endured searing temperatures, with many communities passing 46°C. Mopping her brow in the heat on Tuesday, Warracknabeal Bowls Club president Edna Anderson reads the club weather station thermometer at just under 50 degrees.
