Horsham apprentice wins regional award
Benjamin Janetzki of Horsham has been recognised for his exceptional craftsmanship, winning the Ballarat Chairperson’s Award at the Master Builders Victoria’s Regional Apprentice of the Year Awards.

The event at the Mercure Hotel and Convention Centre in Ballarat brought together over 110 guests to celebrate the region’s top apprentices on February 20.
Mr Janetzki was born and raised in Horsham, and his journey in carpentry began at a young age.
He first gained experience through one-day-a-week placements while still in school.
When COVID disrupted traditional education, he increased his time in the trade, working three days a week instead of attending school.
By the end of the year, he secured an apprenticeship with Winstar Constructions, launching a four-year journey that has now led to industry recognition.
Reflecting on the award, Janetzki admitted his surprise at the win.
“I was shocked. I wasn’t expecting it at all,” he said.
“When it got down to the last three and I was one of them, it was very surprising.
“It put a smile on my face.”
Judges credited his success to his strong work ethic and attention to detail.
Janetzki emphasised the importance of patience and persistence in the trade.
“If you put the time into the work and make sure every step is done properly, the results will show,” he said.
Looking ahead, he plans to stay with Winstar Constructions for at least another 12 to 24 months before considering his next steps.
While he hopes to start his own business, he believes he is still gaining valuable experience. “I will start business one day, but not anytime soon,” he said.
Encouraging young people interested in carpentry, Janetzki advised new apprentices to stay committed, ask questions, and be patient.
“The first year can be slow, and you might spend a lot of time cleaning, but it gets better.
“The ones who ask questions and show eagerness to learn get recognised the most,” he shared.
