The National Gallery of Victoria was back with their Kids on Tour series in the last week of the school holidays, bringing free arts, crafts, activities and workshops to local kids.

Budding artists were inspired to use their imaginations to design and draw a vehicle or household object out of fruits and vegetables.

There were a range of wonderfully weird ideas from a corn-lamp, a hot air balloon made from an orange, lollipop houses, marshmallow cars and more.

Afterwards came a sea-themed activity full of colour and smiling faces, and a collage and drawing activity which also included some fun facts about Australia’s most misunderstood mammal - the flying fox - and it’s importance to Australia’s environment.

NGV director Tony Ellwood AM explained the importance of providing such activities to all children, and their dedication to continuing the service.

“The Kids on Tour program is an integral part of our role in connecting children and their families through art, design and culture,” Mr Ellwood said.

“Ten years on from its inception, we partnered with more community venues than ever to reinforce our commitment to providing access to art and design for all Victorians.”

The NGV’s 2024 program was the largest to date, with more than 140 venues participating across the state in a range of settings including art galleries, libraries, paediatric hospitals, neighbourhood houses and migrant resource centres.

The activities were all free of charge, hosted by Hindmarsh Shire Council, and all materials were supplied.
