Life membership for aviation dedication
DECADES of dedication to preserving Nhill’s aviation heritage have earned Graham Drage a life membership of the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre. The June 14 ceremony honoured years of volunteer service, recognising his contributions to the centre’s restoration projects.

Mr Drage’s lifelong passion for aviation began in 1961 when he flew wartime aircraft.
He was recognised for his significant contribution to preserving the region’s aviation heritage, including helping the centre acquire an Avro Anson.
Reflecting on his honour, Mr Drage said the life membership meant a great deal to him.
“It was very pleasing to receive the life membership,” he said.
Mr Drage was acknowledged for helping to preserve the centre's aviation history by donating the Avro Anson and for years of service.
He has been involved with the Nhill Aviation History Centre since its establishment back in 2008.
Preserving Nhill’s aviation heritage remains at the heart of the centre’s mission, keeping the region’s aviation legacy alive for generations to come.
Although little was once known about the town’s aviation heritage, community members have recognised its significance and worked diligently to establish the heritage centre to honour the area’s unique history.
Nhill’s aviation story started in 1919 when the town welcomed its first aircraft, a De Havilland DH6, to the racecourse.
The aerodrome later became a refuelling stop for aircraft travelling across Melbourne and Adelaide and was the first accredited aerodrome in regional Victoria.
During World War II, the aerodrome became a Royal Australian Air Force Air School Training Base, training more than 10,000 women and men across five years.
Today, the Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre continues to preserve that legacy through restoration projects, community events, and exhibitions.
Volunteers continue to play a crucial role in the organisation, assisting with guided tours, restoration work, and the ongoing preservation of one of the Wimmera’s most significant aviation collections.
