NINE choirs and two big bands will be among a host of performers set to transform the Murtoa Mechanics Hall for a unique night of entertainment to mark the town’s 150th anniversary.

The free-for-all event - Murtoa Sings: A Musical Extravaganza In The Sticks - will be the highlight of Murtoa's Big Weekend, commemorating the anniversary of the settlement of Murtoa, from September 30 to October 2.

More than 250 local and touring musicians will be performing from 7pm on Saturday, October 1.

Eight of those choirs will be travelling from Melbourne and Ballarat to perform, and Murtoa's own Red Hot Marmas will be performing with the Horsham Rural City Council Band and the St Arnaud Norman Simpson Memorial Pipe Band on the night.

"The event promises to be great entertainment with the program consisting of mostly well-known, fun and popular music, with the odd surprise," Murtoa Stick Shed Committee member and Murtoa Red Hot Marmas' musician Margaret Flemming said.

"The audience will have numerous chances to participate with all 250 performers at the event, which has proved extremely popular in the past.

"The production will be theatrical and dramatic, and includes music, special effects lighting, screen projections and other theatrical devices, and is sure to surprise and delight the audience."

Ms Flemming urged all to play a part in this "history-making extravaganza" and expects a "very large audience".

Ms Flemming also wishes to remind anyone attending to bring their own chairs as there is no seating in the Stick Shed.

The three-day event will currently include activities such as a Stick Shed tour, the 13th Annual A&P Agricultural Show, a Monster Market, a Cup Race Meeting, art exhibitions, a Dunmunkle Sumpoilers Historic Engines display and the Water Tower Museum.

Murtoa's Big Weekend organising committee invites any community groups or members to have their say on the three-day event.

The committee meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7pm at the Murtoa Neighbourhood House, where all can come together to discuss ideas and share their vision.
