Strong junior programs vital for club success

Across the Wimmera, we are shifting from summer sport into winter seasons, while for some, participation continues year-round.

Fixtures change and colours shift, but one thing remains constant.

The future of our sport locally will likely come from the youngest players at our clubs.

If we want strong and sustainable clubs, the most important thing we do is how we deliver sport for our youngest participants.

Those first experiences in programs like Auskick, Net Set Go, Cricket Blast, HookIn2Hockey or Hot Shots are not just introductions to a sport.

They are introductions to the club, what is means, what it stands for and if done correctly, it can significantly contribution to lifelong connection to being active.

Too often, success is measured by how many juniors a club has. A better question is how many come back.

Retention tells the real story.

When kids return, it reflects enjoyment, connection and a positive environment.

When they don’t, something has been missed.

At the centre of this is people. The person delivering that entry-level program is one of the most important roles in any club.

It is not just about knowing the sport. It is about energy, patience and making every child feel included.

Clubs also need to think beyond the session itself. For a new family, walking into a club can be daunting.

Is it welcoming?

Is communication clear?

Does someone say hello?

Simple things matter. A friendly face. A clear plan. A buddy system that helps new families feel part of it quickly.

Parents are not just watching the activity. They are asking themselves one simple question. Does this club care about my child?

And what happens after the session matters too. A BBQ, a chat, a high five. That is where connection is built.

Less than one per cent of participants will reach elite level. The focus should be on the other 99 per cent. If they enjoy it, they stay. If they stay, clubs grow.

Get junior sport right and everything else follows.

Future players, volunteers, coaches and stronger communities.

It all starts with the experience we create for our youngest participants.
