Unfortunately, extreme heat cancelled our advertised starting night, so competition commenced on January 14th.

Twelve teams have entered with the competition, on paper, looking keen.

Last year’s winners, “Glory bowlers”, (Kael Zanker, Bailey Watts and Damon Bryce), started well in their first game but were overcome by “Pipers’ people”, (Julie Pearson, Jing Robertson and Analyn), who won on the last end by one shot!

Glory was found by “Glory” in the next game against “Unicorns”, (Lee Nikkelson, Mark and Steven Anderson), when they scored multiples in the ends they won. “Unicorns” had just come off a win against “Paddy P”, (Isobel and Simone Davison and Andrew Richards).

The “Pipers” consolidated their ladder position with a second win for the night against “Cuties”, (Belinda Muller, Leonie Saunders and Arun), who won the Encouragement award when they scored a total of two points in the two games played. The only way is up from there; an interesting challenge!

“Paddy P” equalled ends won, with their opponents, in their second game but lacked shots scored against “Kool Kats”, (Sonia Martinali, Darren Taylor and Gail White), who had also won their first game to put them in fourth place overall.

“3 Tenners”, (Robyn McLachlan, Norm McLean and Brett Johnson), are a team to watch as they improve and become used to the competition.

“Dark Horses”, (Amber Healey Hugh Nixon and Simon Cousins), first met “Rolling Stones”, (Chris O’Connell, Ailys McQueen and Chris Niewand), to notch up a win in their first game, then succumbed to “Cannum Curlers” (Brendon Bibby, Brendon Bride and Owen Osborne), in the next. The “Stones” went on to win their second contest and share fifth spot on the leader board with three other teams.

Last year’s runner-up team, ”Willies’ Wonkas”, (Brian Taylor, Emma Zanker and Gordon Templar), were unable to notch a win but there is a lot of bowls yet to be played; they won the runner-up “Encouragement” award on the night.

“Connors’ Offspring” fielded an emergency team of club bowlers which carded two wins to put them in equal second place.

Night one ladder leader “Curlers”, met “Cuties” first off and showed them how it is done. Even with “Dark Horses” talent the “Curlers” put their best foot forward and lead the field by two points at nights’ end.

Brendon Bride won the ‘spider’ and Simon Cousins, ‘ditch to ditch’. The ‘first toucher” was Bailey Watts while the only ‘resting toucher’ was achieved by Gail White.

Mark Anderson won the meat voucher.

Three games were played on the second night of the twilight bowls competition sponsored by Warrack Motel.

This helped cover the games missed when the first night was cancelled due to heat. Another three-game night will be run next week, to complete the coverage. Only two teams won all three games.

“3 Tenners” (Brett Johnson, Robyn McLachlan and Norm McLean), defeated “Cuties”, “Glory Bowlers” and “Bowling Stones”. After two losses last week the “Tenners” were over-joyed with this result which puts them in a competitive position in the contest.

“Pipers’ People”, (Judy Smith, Kym Smith and Trish Rawlins), was the other three-game winning team to outscore their opponents, “Bowling Stones”, (Chris O’Connell, Ailys McQueen and Chris Niewand), “Connors Offspring”, (Caleb and Abbey Powell and Brad Holland, running second on the ladder), and last week’s leaders, “Cannum Curlers”, (Brendon Bibby, Brendon Bride and Owen Osborne). They are comfortable leaders, on 118 points, at this stage.

Four teams posted two wins for the night. “Conners’ Offspring”, defeated “Unicorns”, (Lee Nikkelson, Mark and Steven Anderson) and “Paddy P”, (Simone Davison, Andrew Richards and Val Taylor). These two teams were awarded the “Most Promising award” because patience and perseverance show promise. Stick with it guys.

“Connors’ Offspring” hold second place on the ladder, having only lost one game so far.

Another two gamer was “Glory Bowlers” who over-ran “Paddy P” and “Cannum Curlers” and sit mid-field at this stage.

“Cuties”, (Leonie Saunders, Josh Barry and Bill Kerr), had wins against “Willies’ Wonkas”, (Emma Zanker, Gordan Templar and Dale Stronach) and “Unicorns”. “Cuties are on 51 aggregate points, not impossible.

“Dark Horses”, (Hugh Nixon, Simon Cousins and Shane Langman), defeated “Kool Kats”, (Sonia Martinali, Darren Taylor and Gail White), and “Paddy P”, which keeps them in the hunt.

Hopefully the weather allows us to complete our program this year with extreme heat threatening again.

‘Spider’ winner this week was Owen Osborne, ‘ditch to ditch’, Brendon Bride and Shane Langman had the ‘first toucher’.

‘Resting touchers’ came thick and fast this week as players learnt how it is done! They were: Sonia Martinali, Darren Taylor and Abbey Powell. Shane Langman and Brendon Bibby had bowls coming to rest within 1cm of the jack. All received novelties provided by K P, our local Warrack Motel owner, thank you K P.

Voucher winner was Kael Zanker, lucky Kael.
