When is a caravan actually a boat?

It was unfortunately quite appropriate for Steve and Glenda Boschen of Kewell to attend the Minyip Show and Shine on Sunday, February 22, to exhibit their caravan, which doubles as a boat…which is actually defined as a ‘Boatahome'.

Kewell couple Steve and Glenda Boschen has significant interest in their new Boatahome from visitors to the Minyip Show and Shine on Sunday.

The ‘Boatahome’ Quest 790, featured as part of a wide array of motoring, motorbikes, restored vehicles and trucks, which lined the Main Street of Minyip, despite the inclement weather and eventually quite heavy rain.

The Boschens acquired the new custom-built Boathome from Queensland about a year ago, measuring 7.9 metres in length and fitted with two Suzuki 60-horsepower outboard motors.

“In fact, with the two motors at the back, we can actually ski behind the Boatahome,” Mr Boschen said.

Mr Boschen said it is a beautifully built boat, cum caravan with a good-sized kitchen, features a toilet and shower ensuite, plenty of living area with a rear deck or barbeque area.

Glenda loves the abundance of on-board storage.

“It weighs about 3.2 tonnes, so rather than overload a typical 4WD ute, we decided to purchase a small Isuzu truck to tow the outfit.”

“Tuff Engineering at Minyip helped me set up the rig, which also carries a four-wheeler motorbike on the back of the truck, with loading ramps and the like,” Mr Boschen said.

The Boatahome is fully off-grid electric and fitted with solar panels and a 48-volt electric system, even with electric induction cooking…for safety, I didn’t want to have gas onboard as it is a boat,” he said.

It has taken the couple a while to get the outfit to the standard they wanted, and are now planning their first trip, probably along the Murray River in the near future.
