Young stars attend AFL umpire training
The Wimmera Mallee Umpire Association's young officials, Angus King and Phoenix Hopper, recently gained invaluable experience in Melbourne by attending an AFL Field Umpire training session at Marvel Stadium.
The opportunity arose from an invitation by AFL Umpiring Chief Steve McBurney, allowing King and Hopper to witness firsthand the demands of being an AFL umpire.
In addition to the training, Angus joined AFL umpire Alex Whetton in a media production to promote umpiring across Australia, while also experiencing the review process umpires undertake to improve decision-making and game management.
The young umpires were overjoyed by the experience, which included a look inside the ARC, where AFL match-day decisions are made, motivating them to eventually officiate in the AFL.
“Going to AFL umpires training was a fantastic opportunity and experience,” King said.
“It was unreal to see firsthand the system and processes of the umpiring team and the work that goes into ensuring they are improving and learning each week.
“We were welcomed by all the umpires, and it was great to get to know some of them.
“This experience gave me an idea of what the end goal looks like, and hopefully, one day I can be there as a part of their team.
“The experience really solidified my drive to want to continue further.”
Hopper added that the occasion was his best experience with umpiring yet.
“It was probably the best thing I’ve done with umpiring,” he said.
“To see how they work behind the scenes is so cool to experience.
“Overall, it was a great experience and gave me an understanding of what goes on in the AFL umpiring system and their perspective of umpiring.”
Earlier in the year, Hopper got the opportunity to officiate his first Wimmera Football Netball League senior game under the guidance of AFL umpire John Howorth.
Additionally, King travelled with fellow Wimmera Mallee official Blake Bell to help umpire the Australian National School Sport Under 15 Football Championships taking place this week.
